In order to prevent damage to health, the government has established a maximum limit for occupational exposure to welding smoke (previously termed the MAC) of 3 mg/m3 air. The maximum limit for occupational exposure refers to the average concentration measured over an eight-hour working day. This limit for welding smoke will be reduced to 1 mg/m3 as from 1 April 2010. Employers will be obliged to comply with this limit from that date on.
